This era of baseball is just embarrassing, plain and simple. Professional baseball players are now walking on egg shells and they are scared to take anything for fear they will test positive in a random drug test for PED’s. My question is simple, do PED’s make a difference?
When all is said and done, you still need to have the natural ability to play the game. Baseball sounds like a simple game, you hit the ball, you catch the ball and you throw the ball. However, in it’s simplicity lies the difficulty. There will always be someone who can do it better and faster.
The most difficult thing to do in sports is hit a baseball. To hit a round ball with a round bat is very difficult. Now throw in the fact that the ball is coming at speeds above 90mph and is also moving like crazy. I don’t care how strong you are, it takes skill and practice to do this.
You may look at someone like Mark McGuire and say that PED’s helped him. Maybe they did, but what is the difference if a ball is hit 400 feet or 450 feet, it’s still a homerun. Then some may argue that the advantage comes in to effect when a homerun is just barely hit over the fence. If the player had not been taking the PED’s, would this have been a homerun? Who really knows.
I do think that there should be a level playing field and there should be no use of PED’s in any sport. However, there are teams that spend alot of money in sports medicine. There are trainers who are better than others and can get more out of an athlete. There are team doctors who have better treatments that heal athletes faster. Is this fair?
We could argue the points of this forever, but the bottom line is that I want baseball to shine again and not have this black cloud over it. I want to be able to take my son to a game and not have him ask me if any of the players are on PED’s. I want my son to also understand that there are no shortcuts in anything and that hard work is always necessary.
I would like to see a study done on an athlete that has taken PED’s and see what the results are. Show me that and I will guarantee you that that person will not b any better at his sport.
